Ofankor-Nsawam Road Completion Signals New Era for Accra-Kumasi Travel

ACCRA — After years of congestion, delays, and public frustration, the Ofankor-Nsawam Road Project is approaching completion, promising a transformative boost for travel along the busy Accra-Kumasi highway.
Covering a 33.4 kilometer stretch of the N6 corridor, the project is considered one of the most strategic road developments in Ghana’s recent infrastructure history.
Construction began in 2022 but faced setbacks due to funding shortages and logistical challenges. However, progress accelerated in late 2025 after renewed government support under the “Big Push” infrastructure project, allowing contractors to meet revised completion timelines.
A Modern, High-Capacity Design
The upgraded highway introduces a modern design aimed at eliminating traffic bottlenecks that historically plagued Pokuase, Amasaman, Medie, and Nsawam.
Key sections have been expanded to multiple lanes, complemented by service roads that separate local traffic from long-distance vehicles. Newly constructed interchanges and flyovers allow uninterrupted traffic flow, significantly reducing delays at traditional junctions.
Pedestrian safety has been prioritised with footbridges at high-traffic points, while improved drainage systems address flooding that previously worsened congestion during the rainy season. Street lighting, road markings, and traffic signage are being finalized to enhance visibility and safety, particularly at night.
Economic Impact: Cutting Travel Time
The road is expected to dramatically cut travel times and boost regional trade connectivity.
“Trips that once took over an hour or two during peak traffic could now take less than 30 minutes, easing pressure on commuters and commercial drivers.”
Traders transporting goods between Accra, Kumasi, and northern Ghana anticipate faster deliveries and lower transport costs, boosting trade efficiency.
While finishing works continue, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has urged motorists to exercise caution as they adapt to the new lane configurations. Once fully commissioned, the Ofankor-Nsawam Road is set to become a landmark achievement in Ghana’s urban transport development.
