Desperate 'Diesel Rush': Locals Risk Lives After Tanker Overturns at Bereku

BEREKU — While most people were sleeping off the New Year festivities, a dangerous “gold rush” was unfolding just down the road at Bereku. Early Friday morning on January 2nd, the usual quiet of the Kumasi highway was shattered when a massive fuel tanker, bearing registration GN 8284-23, lost its balance and overturned.
By 4:00 AM, the smell of raw diesel had filled the air. But instead of running away from the potential bomb, local residents did the unthinkable.
A High-Stakes Scramble
Armed with yellow “Kufuor” gallons, plastic buckets, and even small pans, dozens of men and women swarmed the mangled truck. In the dark, people were seen desperately scooping the gushing fuel from the road and gutters, completely ignoring the risk of a single spark turning the whole scene into a graveyard.
“This is our New Year gift!”
One man was heard shouting the above as he lugged a 25-litre gallon away from the wreck. It’s a sad sight, but the desperation on the ground is palpable. With the new January 1st utility price hikes hitting pockets hard and the price of fuel still high at the pumps, many here see a leaking tanker not as a disaster, but as a survival opportunity.
Police Response
The police have since moved in to secure the area, and thankfully, we didn’t see a repeat of the fire tragedies often associated with fuel scoops in the past.
However, the “Diesel Rush” of January 2nd remains the main topic of conversation at the Amasaman trotro station this week. As the dust settles and road contractors finally return to work on the main stretch, this incident serves as a stark reminder: in these hard times, some would rather face fire than an empty pocket.
