Amasaman China Mall Indefinitely Closed After Floor Collapse Injures Two

AMASAMAN — The bustling Amasaman China Mall, a popular shopping destination in the Ga West Municipality, remains under indefinite closure this week following a partial floor collapse that has sent shockwaves through the community.

The Ga West Municipal Assembly (GWMA) took swift action to seal off the premises to prevent further risk after a section of the first floor caved in, injuring at least two individuals .

Panic and Injuries

The incident occurred around 6:00 PM on Sunday, December 28, 2025. According to reports, a customer and a worker sustained fracture injuries as concrete and goods suddenly gave way.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of sudden panic, with shoppers quickly evacuating as the structural failure became apparent. Emergency services were promptly on the scene, rushing the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“Excessive Loading” and Structural Flaws

Addressing the critical safety breach, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga West, Mr. Desmond Sowah Nai, confirmed that preliminary assessments pointed to human error and design issues.

“Preliminary assessments point to excessive loading—an overload of heavy stock on the first floor—coupled with fundamental structural flaws in the building’s original design.”

This dangerous combination created an environment that ultimately led to the collapse. The GWMA has made it clear that the facility will not be permitted to reopen until a comprehensive structural integrity audit is completed by certified independent engineers.

A Community Disrupted

As of today, the mall stands conspicuously quiet. Its entrances are marked by official GWMA seals and stern warnings, with security personnel visible to ensure public access remains restricted.

The closure has left numerous mall employees temporarily out of work and has disrupted the shopping routines of thousands of residents who frequented the establishment. However, the GWMA’s firm stance underscores a commitment to public safety, signaling a rigorous approach to building regulations within the municipality.
